I want to start this week by extending a heartfelt thank you for your continued support, enthusiasm, and partnership. Your involvement truly makes a difference and helps our school community thrive!
As you read through this week’s newsletter, you'll find important updates, upcoming deadlines, and highlights of everything our students have been working on across campus.
We also have a highly anticipated, fun, and educational event on the horizon: Fat Bear Week is back!
- From September 22nd through the 29th, we’ll be following along with Katmai National Park’s annual tournament to see which brown bear has prepared the best for winter hibernation. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about wildlife biology, adaptation, and conservation—be sure to ask them which bear gets their vote!
- More information about our fun schedule of activities will be coming soon in a future post. Please be on the look out!

We are focusing on AUTHENTICITY this month as part of our Core Values Program! Students will be reading our book of the month, There Was A Party for Langston: King of Letters, to learn about our incredible and generous leader, Langston Hughes. Students will engage in discussions and activities throughout the month to learn more about our spotlight leader and our core value: Authenticity. As students participate in our lessons they are also creating special Core Values Books that they will be able to take home at the end of the year! CBEDS Day is Coming!!
The CBEDS count day is our BIG, OFFICIAL student count day! This is the day we count students and this count becomes our base number for ALL of the funding formulas (average daily attendance, Title I, Supplemental, etc). So it is CRITICAL that we have as close to perfect attendance as possible. Our district's student attendance rates continue to be a huge focus, so getting as accurate a count as possible for Weller on October 7th is of the utmost importance.
Attendance Counts! Here are some facts below:
We’d like to thank our families for making attendance at school a priority. Staff, students and PTA have worked extremely hard to raise funds for our school. Students who attend every day bring in 100% of expected funding for the year.
- Did you know that missing school for 1 day is a loss of $85 per day? Think about how hard it is for our school to raise that amount and all you have to do is be present!
- Examples of ways this is lost is by extending a weekend trip by taking Friday or Monday off or not completing an Independent Study Contract.
- Did you know that Weller still gets full funding for partial attendance? Come for part of the day whenever possible!
- Our students miss learning opportunities when they are out and catching up is hard to do.
- Did you know that the public looks at our school attendance rates as a measure of our school quality? High attendance rates keep public school perception high!
- We are glad you are enrolled at Weller. Be here! It’s good for learning and our school!

- Lunch and breakfast is available for all students. Breakfast will be served from 7:30- 7:55am and lunch will be served during the school day.

Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing our students' educational experiences and supporting our daily school activities.
The district has changed the volunteer process for efficiency and to ensure student safety. We will now be following a new process for all NEW parent volunteers, effective immediately. Paper volunteer forms are no longer accepted.
The Volunteer Application now requires families to complete a Google Form along with a mandated training. The mandated training will need to be completed by all current approved AND new volunteers. Current, cleared volunteers will not have to fill out the Google Form. For our previously cleared volunteers, our HR department will reach out to those who need to renew/update/or complete pending documents in the future.

- Click on the Volunteer Instructions and Form link to access the detailed instructions.

We are currently short staffed and are in need of volunteers to help us support our students' recess and lunch times. It is time for our annual Joseph Weller Pledge Drive to gather funds for student field trips. The hope is that families can contribute funds towards student field trips one time at the beginning of the school year to take care of all the trips that would happen throughout the year. A one-time donation of $50.00 per child will ensure that your student’s class can go on a field trip this year. THANK YOU TO THE FAMILIES THAT HAVE ALREADY DONATED! |

What is School Site Council (SSC)?
School Site Council is a group of parents, teachers, and school staff who meet monthly with the principal to review site plans ( School Plan for Student Achievement or SPSA), school data, and the school budget. This team collaborates with the principal to analyze the implementation of school programs and to make sure that programs are meeting the needs of Weller students. All members of school site council are elected by their peers (ie. parents are elected by other parents, teachers are elected by other teachers, etc.).
Why should you serve on SSC?
School Site Council is a great way for parents/family members to learn about and get involved in the decision-making process at Weller! You'll learn about the programs we run at Weller, how we budget and determine where to spend funds, and how to analyze how effective our programs are. Plus - we have a great time!

Please complete the information on this SSC Nomination Form if you are interested in a seat on the council. Your input and collaboration is highly valued in support of our students. If we have more nominations than seats, the parent community will conduct a vote.

Joining the PTA is a way to show your support for the teachers, staff, and students. Support can come in many forms, and joining the PTA doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment. 😊
Membership fee is $20 per family, which includes all of your students and their parents/guardians. The PTA is a 501(c)(3) organization so the membership fee and additional donations are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS. Please fill out this membership form and send it into the school to your student’s teacher or drop it by the office with the $20 membership fee. You can also join through our Totem page if you prefer. We also always accept membership registrations at our events, just find our table or one of the PTA officers.
We are always looking for volunteers to help us run our events. After you’ve joined the PTA, fill out this form and let us know what you’re interested in volunteering for and we’ll be in touch!

A Goal-Setting Conference takes place early in the school year. It is an opportunity for teachers, families, and students to meet and begin to build the relationships that are critical to successful home-school partnerships. At this conference, you will discuss:
- Your child’s strengths, both academic and social/emotional/behavioral
- Your child’s areas for growth, both academic and social/emotional/behavioral
- Goals for your child for the year
- Strategies to help your child reach those goals at both school and home
