Weller's Community Newsletter

August 31, 2026

September has arrived!

Good morning Weller families!

We just completed our 12th day of school. It was wonderful to see our students present yesterday at our Core Values Assembly for Generosity. See below for pictures from our assembly.

SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH
Did you know that missing just two days of school a month can make it harder for young learners to master reading and math? September is Attendance Awareness Month, and our goal is to partner with you to ensure every student feels supported and excited to learn. Showing up on time every day builds confidence, strong friendships, and lifelong habits. If your family is facing hurdles with morning routines or transportation, please reach out to our office—we are here to help!

Thank you for reading our newsletter. We are looking forward to a great week ahead.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Elzey and Mrs. Sharma

Weller's Core Values

We are focusing on GENEROSITY this month as part of our Core Values Program! Students will be reading our book of the month, The Boy Who Grew A Forest, to learn about our incredible and generous leader, Jadav Payeng. Students will engage in discussions and activities throughout the month to learn more about our spotlight leader and our core value: Generosity. As students participate in our lessons they are also creating special Core Values Books that they will be able to take home at the end of the year! We encourage all families to participate with our Core Values Program! Please see below to learn more. 😁 Please click HERE to watch and listen to a read aloud of this month's story.

ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH

Key Attendance Facts:
  • The 2-Day Rule: Missing just two days of school per month—excused or unexcused—adds up to 10% of the school year (18 days), placing a student in the category of chronic absenteeism.
  • Early Reading Foundation: Children who are chronically absent in Kindergarten and 1st Grade are significantly less likely to read on grade level by the end of 3rd Grade.
  • Excused Absences Still Count: While staying home for actual illness is necessary, total missed days still equal lost classroom instruction, group practice, and teacher interaction.
  • Social-Emotional Benefits: Regular attendance helps young children feel secure, master daily classroom routines, and build strong friendships with peers.
Actionable Tips to Share with Parents
  • Establish Evening Routines: Pack backpacks, lay out clothes, and set consistent bedtimes the night before to reduce morning stress.
  • Create a Back-Up Plan: Connect with a relative, neighbor, or fellow school parent to establish a carpool plan for unexpected morning emergencies.
  • Schedule Appointments Intentionally: Aim to schedule routine dental/doctor checkups and family travel during school holidays, teacher workdays, or late afternoons.
  • Know When to Stay Home vs. Attend: Keep children home for fevers, vomiting, or contagious conditions. Encourage attendance for mild anxiety, morning fatigue, or minor sniffles—often, getting into the classroom routine cures morning jitters.

NEW VOLUNTEER PROCEDURES

Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing our students' educational experiences and supporting our daily school activities.

The district has changed the volunteer process for efficiency and to ensure student safety. We will now be following a new process for all NEW parent volunteers, effective immediately. Paper volunteer forms are no longer accepted.

The Volunteer Application now requires families to complete a Google Form along with a mandated training. The mandated training will need to be completed by all current approved AND new volunteers. Current, cleared volunteers will not have to fill out the Google Form. For our previously cleared volunteers, our HR department will reach out to those who need to renew/update/or complete pending documents in the future.

Steps to Complete the Process:
  1. Visit musd.org.
  2. Click on the Volunteer tab.
  3. Click on the Volunteer Instructions and Form link to access the detailed instructions.
  4. Google form link: Volunteer google form link
Important Information for Existing/Approved Volunteers:
  • Ensure your TB test/assessment is up-to-date (must be renewed every 4 years).

Below are the links you can reference.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation, patience, and commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient environment for our students. Please contact our office if you have any questions.

We are so thankful for your consideration!

ANNUAL FIELD TRIP PLEDGE DRIVE

It is time for our annual Joseph Weller Pledge Drive to gather funds for student field trips. The hope is that families can contribute funds towards student field trips one time at the beginning of the school year to take care of all the trips that would happen throughout the year. A one-time donation of $50.00 per child will ensure that your student’s class can go on a field trip this year. THANK YOU TO THE FAMILIES THAT HAVE ALREADY DONATED!

Classroom Supplies & Donation Wishlists

Please take a look at the classroom supply lists that our teachers have put together to help students get ready for the beginning of the school year. Most supplies will be provided for your students and any donations would be greatly appreciated.

CONNECTION

Creating opportunities to connect, grow, and strengthen our Weller family.

Join PTA

Joining the PTA is a way to show your support for the teachers, staff, and students. Support can come in many forms, and joining the PTA doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment. 😊

Membership fee is $20 per family, which includes all of your students and their parents/guardians. The PTA is a 501(c)(3) organization so the membership fee and additional donations are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS. Please fill out this membership form and send it into the school to your student’s teacher or drop it by the office with the $20 membership fee. You can also join through our Totem page if you prefer. We also always accept membership registrations at our events, just find our table or one of the PTA officers.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us run our events. After you’ve joined the PTA, fill out this form and let us know what you’re interested in volunteering for and we’ll be in touch!
