Welcome to the 2026-2027 School Year!

Good morning Weller families!

The 2026-2027 school year has arrived and I look forward to all of the new possibilities and learning that this year will bring. I hope that you are as excited as I am to kick off another fantastic school year. Our teachers and staff have been hard at work preparing for the arrival of our amazing students and families. Their hard work and enthusiasm are sure to create a welcoming and productive environment for all of our students. We look forward to a year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences. We encourage parents and family members to get involved and stay engaged with our activities and events throughout the year. Our staff is always here to support you and our students.

This year we are also welcoming two new teachers to our teaching staff 😁:
Mr. Braga - 5th/6th Grade (Math)
Ms. Kalinawan - STEAM

As the principal of Joseph Weller Elementary School, I am truly honored to lead such an exceptional group of students, educators, and families. Thank you for being a part of our Weller family. I look forward to our partnership throughout the school year to best ensure that our students are being served, cared for, and celebrated. Let's make it a year to remember! 😁

Thank you for taking the time to read our welcome back newsletter and I look forward to seeing you all next week!

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL

DROP OFF
INSTRUCTIONS

As our staff is getting ready for students to return, we are asking you to prep your students from home this weekend.

  • Students must exit the vehicle through the passenger side of the car to ensure a safe environment. Family members will remain in the car while student valets will assist your student. To help with this, have students practice buckling and unbuckling themselves. Our staff will help open doors for them.
  • If you have smaller children who will not be attending Weller, move their car seat to behind the drivers side so your student can enter or exit the vehicle easily.
  • Practice tying shoelaces: There are tons of videos online with tricks to help if your student struggles with making the bunny ears.
  • Have your student help you in the kitchen so they can practice opening snacks on their own, opening thermoses and lunch containers so they can do this without help during lunch time.
  • Practice peeling oranges and bananas.
  • Practice opening and closing their lunch box, thermoses, etc.
  • Adjust your bedtime/morning routines: Begin adjusting bedtimes and wake up times to make it easier for the first week of school.
  • Mornings are stressful for all families. As adults we set the tone for the morning with our students. Please be mindful of this and do your best to be calm even if you are running late or it’s a slow start.

CLASS LISTS

Teacher Assignments:
  • Teacher Assignments: Classroom placements will be available in the Aeries Parent Portal on Wednesday, August 12th. Our staff puts considerable thought into creating balanced classrooms. Please note that assignments are subject to change during the first three weeks as enrollment fluctuates.
  • Overflow: If a class is full, students will temporarily meet in Room 116 until they can be placed at Weller or another Milpitas school.
  • Mixed-Grade Classes: Weller, like all MUSD elementary schools, uses multi-age classrooms. Students are placed in these classes for many reasons (such as independence and leadership, not academic ability) and will receive differentiated learning focused on their specific grade-level standards.

See pages 18-19 of the MUSD Parent Handbook for more details on overflow and mixed-grade classes.
chrome

CHROMEBOOKS

All students are issued an MUSD chromebook in Aeries. If you are new to Weller, you will be issued a chromebook during the first few days of school.

Many returning Weller students brought their chromebooks home over the summer. Please have your student bring their Chromebook and charger to school on the first day of school. For this school year, most of the primary teachers will ask students to keep the chromebook in class and some of our intermediate teachers will have students bring it back and forth or leave it at home.

This school year, if there is any damage to chromebooks, students will be financially responsible for repairs or replacements.

Join PTA

Joining the PTA is a way to show your support for the teachers, staff, and students. Support can come in many forms, and joining the PTA doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment. 😊

The PTA has 3 types of members:
  • PTA Board Officers - Meet monthly and operate the business of the PTA
  • PTA Volunteers - Volunteer their time when they are able and want to, no commitment
  • PTA Members - No commitments, the membership fee helps, and the show of numbers shows our support (this is all you’re signing up for by joining)
The PTA has helped the school and everyone using the membership fees and other fundraisers such as Yogurtland, Apex Fun Run, Sees Candy sales, Bingo, and many others. Some examples are:
  • Trunk-or-Treat event
  • Spring Carnival
  • Multi-cultural celebration
  • Movie Night
  • Lunch tables for the students
  • 6th grade promotion ceremony
  • Teacher Appreciation gifts, lunches and teas
  • Weller's digital marquee
  • Upgraded Multi-Use Room sound system
  • Afterschool popsicles for students
There are no commitments by joining, you are just showing your support by being a member and donating your membership fee. Anything more you are able and willing to do or give is your choice. Membership fee is $20 per family, which includes all of your students and their parents/guardians. The PTA is a 501(c)(3) organization so the membership fee and additional donations are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS. Please fill out this membership form and send it into the school to your student’s teacher or drop it by the office with the $20 membership fee. You can also join through our Totem page if you prefer. We also always accept membership registrations at our events, just find our table or one of the PTA officers.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us run our events. After you’ve joined the PTA, fill out this form and let us know what you’re interested in volunteering for and we’ll be in touch!
