Principal's Message

Have a great summer!

Good morning Weller Families,

It is hard to believe that summer has arrived! We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our families for a truly wonderful school year. Your partnership, support, and dedication have made this year a fantastic success for our students. We are so proud of everything our community has achieved together!

To keep those bright minds sharp over the break, we highly encourage all students to keep reading every day. 📚 Whether it’s a gripping mystery, a comic book, or reading aloud together as a family, every page counts!

Also, be sure to check out our summer resources for learning below.

We hope you all have a safe, relaxing, and joy-filled summer vacation. Take time to rest, play, and make wonderful memories.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready to learn in August! Our Welcome Back Event will take place on August 12th and our FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL will be on August 13th. 🐴❤️

Sincerely,
Mrs. Elzey & Mrs. Sharma

Sending off two more incredible Weller family members

Laura

Mrs. Wahied is Seattle Bound

Our wonderful Mrs. Wahied will be moving to Seattle this summer. While we are sad to lose her, we are incredibly happy that this move brings her the wonderful opportunity to be much closer to her family. To say we will miss her is an understatement. Mrs. Wahied built and nurtured an amazing STEAM program from the ground up. Her passion, creativity, and tireless dedication has enriched the lives of our students and families in ways that will be felt for years to come. We wish her the absolute best as she begins this exciting new chapter in the Pacific Northwest!
Marian

Mrs. Marian is Moving to William Burnett Elementary School

We want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible Mrs. Marian as she prepares for her next exciting chapter at Burnett. Mrs. Marian has left an undeniable mark on our school. We are deeply grateful for everything she brought to our campus. She completely transformed our front office into a beautifully efficient, smooth-running space. Mrs. Marian also brought genuine joy to each school day and showed our community great care. Thank you for the vital translation support for our families, ensuring everyone felt welcomed and heard. Thank you for everything Mrs. Marian and you will always be part of the Weller Family!

☀️ Beating the "Summer Slide": Keeping Young Minds Active

As the final bell of the school year approaches, we want to celebrate the incredible academic strides our students have made! To keep that momentum going, it is important to talk about a common seasonal challenge known as summer learning loss or the "summer slide."

Summer learning loss is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the school year. Fortunately, keeping your child's brain engaged doesn't require turning your vacation into a second school year. Just a little bit of consistent, fun practice can make a massive difference.

Fun, Screen-Free Ways to Prevent the Summer Slide:
Preventing learning loss doesn’t have to feel like homework. You can easily weave literacy and math into your daily family rhythms with these simple, practical tips:
  • Embrace Your Home Language: Sharing family stories, folklore, and songs in your native language builds strong narrative skills and vocabulary. This creates a deep foundation of understanding that easily transfers over to English text later.
  • Create a "Kitchen Classroom": Turn dinner prep into a learning moment. Have your child write or draw grocery lists, read recipes out loud, and practice fractions by measuring ingredients while you cook together.
  • Explore Environmental Print: While driving or walking around town, play "I Spy" with neighborhood signs, logos, and billboards to build early letter and word awareness.
  • The "Subtitle Secret": When children watch TV or educational videos, turn on the Closed Captioning (subtitles). This effortlessly turns screen time into reading practice by connecting spoken words directly to text.
  • Open a Family "Post Office": Keep writing skills sharp by encouraging children to mail handwritten letters to friends, or leave fun, silly notes for each other on the refrigerator.
  • Join Free Summer Reading Challenges: Take advantage of local rewards to keep reading exciting. Programs through your local public library, Pizza Hut’s "Book It!", or Barnes & Noble offer free books, pizzas, and sweet treats as prizes for tracking reading logs.

The Bottom Line: Just 15 to 20 minutes a day of reading or practicing math games can completely stop the summer slide. Let's work together to ensure our Mustangs return ready for the new school year!

Ongoing Opportunities

Loaves & Fishes food distribution will NOT take place on Mondays until further notice.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks, the Loaves & Fishes staff and volunteers have experienced several incidents involving unacceptable behavior, verbal harassment, aggressive
conduct, and the throwing of objects. Because of this, we have chosen to pause services, in the hopes that our community can reflect and do better moving forward.
