Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Fueling Minds for the Home Stretch

With only 9 days of school left, routines can easily start to slide! However, the final stretch of the school year is actually the most important time to focus on the "Big Three" of mental wellness: nutrition, sleep, and screen time. Physical health and mental health are deeply connected. When children eat well, sleep well, and unplug, their brains can properly process emotions, manage stress, and maintain focus.

Here is why these three pillars matter so much, along with quick tips your family can use today:
1. Sleep: The Brain’s Reset Button
  • Why it matters: Sleep is when the brain recharges, processes the day’s learning, and regulates emotions. A sleep-deprived brain is much more prone to anxiety, mood swings, and frustration.
  • Tip for Families: Start the bedtime routine 30 minutes earlier than usual this week to counteract end-of-year fatigue. Keep bedrooms cool, dark, and gadget-free.

2. Nutrition: Fuel for Focus and Mood
  • Why it matters: The gut and the brain are constantly communicating. Diets high in processed sugars cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, leading to irritability, brain fog, and anxiety. Whole foods provide steady, sustainable energy.
  • Tip for Families: Swap out sugary afternoon snacks for "brain foods" like apple slices with peanut butter, yogurt, or a handful of nuts. Ensure everyone is drinking plenty of water, as mild dehydration can mimic feelings of anxiety.

3. Screen Time: Curating Digital Boundaries
  • Why it matters: Excessive screen time—especially right before bed—disrupts sleep hormones and overstimulates the nervous system. Replacing face-to-face interaction or outdoor play with screens can leave kids feeling isolated or restless.
  • Tip for Families: Implement a "Screens Off 1 Hour Before Bed" rule. Instead, use that last hour for reading, drawing, or playing a board game together to help the brain naturally wind down.

💡 The Bottom Line: Taking care of our bodies is one of the best ways we can take care of our minds. Let's work together to keep our Tigers feeling healthy, happy, and strong as we close out the school year!

Important Note: If you ever feel concerned about your child's emotional well-being, please don't hesitate to reach out to our school office or your healthcare provider. We are a village, and we are here to support you!
